4 Excellent Alternative to Mops or Wet Sticks
Posted by Christopher Walton on Dec 11th 2024
PROS Almost completely self-cleaning Great with hair Much less maintenance than a carpet cleaner CONS Limited range of motion in tight spots Not so much steam as hotter water INTRODUCTION I’ve owned Bissell products for many years. Everything from vacuums to carpet cleaners, Bissell has been a go-to brand when I needed something more than a vacuum. I’ve owned my Bissell carpet cleaner for over a decade now and was excited to see what amounts to a cleaner / shampooer for hard surfaces. I had to give it a go. USE Included with the purchase of the product is a multi-surface microfiber brush roll, 3 trial-sized samples of Bissell’s Floor Sanitizer, Floor Cleaner, Vacuum Cleaning solution, and a storage / cleaning base for the product. Bissell sells larger bottles of their cleaners, as well as offers a variety of brush rolls that may be more tailored to your needs. These include the Pet Roll, Hardwood Floor Roll, and Carpet Roll. The Multi-Purpose brush roll included with the cleaner does an admiral job at filling all the roles (pun intended) without neglecting specific surfaces. A jack of all trades, master of none so to speak. The Hydrosteam includes 3 different cleaning modes: Steam, Area Rug, and Hard Floors. Area Rug and Hard Floors allows you to use the product as a lightweight vacuum, while the steam option allows the user to dispense a heated cleaning solution on sealed floors that makes spills and other sticky messes easier to clean. How well does the Hydrosteam clean? Surprisingly well. We consider ourselves clean people. We thoroughly clean our house every 2 weeks and lightly clean in between. Every 2 weeks includes washing the hardwoods and tile floors throughout. Having just done a good cleaning this past Thursday, I was doubtful the Hydrosteam would give much of a return. After all, we had just cleaned and we don’t wear our shoes in the house. Well, that theory went out the window. I’ve included a picture of the water returned from cleaning just the tile floors. DISGUSTING. The steam cleaning function and cleaning solution picked up a bunch of junk that our mop / wet cleaning stick just smeared around. UGH. Time to rethink how we clean house. Embarrassing. Great job Bissell. The tile floors have NEVER felt cleaner. CLEAN-UP One thing that has kept me from ever wanting a steamer is my experience with my Bissell carpet cleaner. While the carpet cleaner does a decent job, it absolutely SUCKS to clean up after you are done. Figure a good 30 – 45 minutes cleaning the cleaner after use. Cutting hair, cleaning the inside of the vacuum, rinsing the parts and hoses. You name it and I hate it. Too awkward, too time consuming, too messy. Bissell has done a very good job eliminating the mess of owning this machine. While there is some stuff to do, it is nothing like owning a carpet cleaner. Once done with your cleaning, bring the machine back to the plastic storage base. Fill the recessed brush roll area with some of Bissell’s citrus cleaning fluid and sit the machine in the storage base. Plug it in and the machine knows it has been placed in its home. The self-cleaning light comes on and in about 30 seconds the machine has run, cleaned itself and sucked nearly all the water out of the storage base. EASY. You still must pull both the clean and dirty water tanks after use and clean them, but it isn’t horrible. I was able to pull the tanks, rinse them out, and clean out the storage base in less than 10 minutes. Not bad. Bissell has done their best at trying to eliminate the cleaning the cleaner chore. NEGATIVES I found the range of motion of vacuum very short. Working in a tight space like a bathroom you can easily get the handle just a little too far vertical. I’m not talking perpendicular to the ground either. Once you do, the protection device kicks in and blocks suction. While I get that it is supposed to protect the cleaner, it is just too fast at blocking airflow. When it does, you MUST shut the cleaner off and let the suction stop to resume cleaning. Annoying. While marketed as a Hydrosteam, I would consider it more of a hot water cleaner. I never really ever saw any true steam from the cleaner. I could see a little, but a true steam cleaner, it is not. A true steam cleaner sanitizes during use due to the extreme temperature. This machine will sanitize, but only using the Bissell Sanitizing formula and only if it is allowed to remain damp on the surface for more than 5 minutes. The steam I see in Bissell’s videos and photos seem to be overly dramatic. CONCLUSIONS The Bissell Crosswave Hydrosteam is a good cleaning tool. As long as the user knows this isn’t a “true” steaming machine, they won’t be disappointed. The Bissell does a very good job at cleaning hard surfaces. My tile floors look and feel great. Most importantly, they dried very quickly, as the Bissell leaves little to no water behind. The Crosswave Hydrosteam is easy to care for and you can tell Bissell has devoted a lot of time making the machine user friendly and easy to maintain. That is a huge and welcome addition to their product line. While this is not a replacement for either my existing carpet cleaner or my carpet vacuum (it cannot compare to either one), it is a keeper compared to my current hard floor cleaning products, whether they be my cleaners for tiles or my sealed hardwoods. 4 Better In Every Way
Posted by Melissa Hammond on Dec 2nd 2024
The new Bissell Crosswave Hydrosteam is absolutely fantastic. I love that I can replace both my steam mop and old Crosswave mop/vac with this new all-in-one device. In my opinion, this new version feels better built, has a better color scheme, cleans better, and is much easier to clean out. My house is mostly wood and tile floors, with dog hair sprinkled throughout. So, being able to vacuum, steam, and mop at the same time is perfect for my lifestyle. With the Bissell Hydrosteam, my cleaning time was basically cut in half. Furthermore, this mop had no issues picking up the dog hair, cleaning up food droplets, and it left no streaks. I also love that this uses less water/solution than the combination of cleaning products I used to use. Moreover, it dries quickly, so I don't have to worry about ruining my wood floors. When it was time to clean the Crosswave, all I had to do was press a button and the self-cleaning kicked in. After that, it was just a matter of emptying the dirty water bin and wiping off any leftover dog hair from around the brush roll area. My only complaint would be that the steam is not really visible. This makes it hard to tell if it is even working at times. Also, some may complain that it has a cord. However, I have used battery-powered wet vacs before. I assure you that there is no comparison to the convenience of being able to plug it into a wall and immediately use it without having to wait for a battery to charge.

The product was easy to assemble. Once put together comes with easy instructions to use and a self cleaning mode. The vacuum is not wireless so remember to assure plug ability in areas needed.

4 Cleans very thoroughly
Posted by Shelly Jimenez on Nov 17th 2024
I've now gone through several different steam mops and I can say right up front this easily wins as the best one I've had. In fact I honestly could hardly wait to replace my last one. This Bissell Crosswave Hydrosteam isn't perfect though and does have its shortcomings, but let's start with the important stuff first, and what's more important than how well it cleans! In this regard it does a stand-up job. I have laminate flooring with 2 large dogs in my house, so you can see their tracks and paw prints all over. One pass with this Bissell though is all it took to clean it all up, and it was a noticeable difference, even though we clean our floors regularly to prevent them from getting too bad. And what you don't see on the floors you definitely see in the dirty water tank! Best of all it didn't leave any type of film or stickiness behind, just nice clean floors that honestly dried really fast within just minutes. This Bissell comes with 2 formula samples as well (actually 3 but the 3rd is for cleaning the mop itself), and for this first job we used the Pet multi-surface formula. It also worked great on our small sunroom that has tile flooring. One of the nice things I noticed right away, as did my wife since we both used it to try it out, is how smoothly and easily it glides. Even though this mop does have a little bit of weight to it, it's very maneuverable and easy to handle. What might be my favorite thing about it though is that when you're all done, it has it's own cleaning cycle to get the brush roller ready for its next use and it does a pretty good job at it, plus its kind of fun to watch for some reason. Now for the not so good stuff. As good as it cleans it doesn't go very far before needing something, whether that be refilling the water tank or emptying the dirty water. The dirty water tank doesn't hold very much, especially considering how low the 'max' line is in comparison to the overall tank. At first glance I honestly didn't even notice that 'max' line, and I didn't get that much cleaning done before I could hear a change in the suction and saw that it was no longer picking up the water off the floor, even though the dirty water tank wasn't even half full. I spent several minutes messing around with it and reading through the trouble-shooting section of the manual before I finally took a closer look at the tank, and saw the 'max' line. Turns out there's a floating style cap in the tank that blocks the suction once the dirty water gets to that 'max' line. It's a great automatic system to keep too much dirty water from damaging anything but the tank design just holds so little of it. As for having to fill the clean water/formula tank, I started out with it full for a large room, which should last up to 700 sf according to Bissell, and happens to be about the same size area of my flooring that I was cleaning. In reality I ended up using about 2 and a half tanks for the job. I'm sure part of that was just me also being thorough with my cleaning, but it shouldn't have been that bad, and we pretty much used up the entire sample bottle of pet multi-surface formula. Another minor thing I didn't like is how there's no 'pre-heating' without turning the power button on, which also turns on the suction, so it just sits there vacuuming away while waiting. Seems it should have a regular power button to turn it on to 'pre-heat' and a separate button to power on the vacuum portion. Between all the tank filling/emptying, cleaning cycle, drying out and set-up, it's not really the kind of steam mop you just have on the ready and use at any moment throughout the day. It's really best suited for those more thorough cleaning days as it's a bit of a process to use. Again though, what's most important is how well it cleans, and for that, this steam mop does an outstanding job, plus I forgot to mention the lights which is a nice addition. The small nitpicks aside, this is still the best steam mop I've ever had and I definitely recommend it and give it 4 out of 5 stars, just be aware of its shortcomings.

5 Multitasker!

The Bissell Crosswave Hydrosteam makes daily life with two big fluffy Siberian cats a little easier. Having cats that are furry comes with some unexpected accidents sometimes after they use the bathroom as stuff will get stuck to their fur and land where it’s not supposed to! Being able to quickly sanitize and steam clean both carpets and hardwood floors if this happens is a big plus. The Crosswave has three separate cleaning modes, hard floor, steam wash and area rug. With a push of a button on the handle you can switch between the three different modes. When you pull the button to dispense the formula the front light will get brighter letting you see the area better and know you’re dispensing formula. The machine comes with three trial size bottles of formula. One hard floor, one multi surface and one clean out formula for the machine. The multi surface is the best smelling carpet/multi surface cleaner I’ve ever smelled. We have one area rug that is a light beige/white and needs spot cleaning a lot, everything I’ve ever used will make this carpet have an unpleasant smell for a little while after you clean it. The multi surface cleaner is the first cleaner that hasn’t done that. When you’re done with the machine, the compartment that collects the dirty water has a nice pull out tray/filter that will collect any debris that’s in the dirty water. It also comes with a storage tray that when you’re done, you pour some of the clean out formula in, sit the machine in, press a button and it runs a clean out cycle that gets any debris out of the machine. If you’re looking for a machine that can make life’s little messes a little easier to clean, the Bissell Crosswave has you covered.
