Smart cup for sipping tea or coffee

Posted by Alexandra Baker on Oct 31st 2024

I tend to drink my coffee quickly, but this cup is perfect for my wife who prefers to enjoy her coffee as she works. The small size works perfectly with the small setting on our coffee make (Keurig). The cup was pretty much what I was expecting, but I was surprised at how useful the app is. I am even thinking about getting another one for my daughter who enjoys tea, since the app has a tea timer and can tell you when your tea/coffee has reached the set temperature. Pros - Nice looking, with quality feel - Customizable LED for indicating status and battery level - Temperature setting is accurate to just a few degrees and the cup even knows when it is empty - Tested 90-minute battery life set at 137 degrees (more than enough for this size cup) - Great app with useful notifications, temperature info, preset temperatures, tea timer, battery level and even a few recipes - Easy to clean (no dishwasher) Things to consider - The charging base, which in most pictures is shown being used like a coaster with a full cup, can’t get wet! I was hoping it was inductive but it is just a set of contacts that are designed to touch a set of rings on the bottom of the cup. It hasn’t happened yet, but I could easily see a spill being the end for this cup if the contacts aren't well sealed. - Ember does offer larger cups, but this one is small. I think the size you get comes down to personal preference, but this works well for people who sip their coffee or tea. - There is no handle, the cup is smooth with a slight curve and has decent weight for its size. The surface has a nice texture and it fits well in your hand, but it still requires care in the way you pick it up/hold it so you don’t drop it. - This is my fault, but I have filled it and forgot to turn it on before. This situation makes the bottom mounted power button seem a little inconvenient.

    Espresso Lovers Rejoice!

Posted by Ricardo Scott on Oct 31st 2024

Ember has finally come out with the perfect size for those that enjoy espresso based drinks (think cappuccinos, lattes, macchiatos, cortados, and flat whites). Where the Ember Mug holds 10oz of coffee, this Ember Cup holds 6oz. At 3.3 inches tall and in diameter, it is a smaller cup size. Keep the size in mind for when you want to switch it out to a regular cup of Joe - you may need to get the mug! Unboxing was fairly straight forward, you get the cup, the charging coaster, charger cable, and informative manuals/instructions. The cup is a beautiful matte black with a matching base. It really looks great on my desk since I am going for more of a minimalistic setup. Once charged, you download and boot up the app from your phone's webstore. The app can really use some improvements. UI is a bit lackluster and controls could definitely be better placed. You think you would want to see the battery status without having to go into the settings. This is the only reason I take away one star BUT you do not need the app to have it stay at the default 135 degree temperature. The battery life has a reported use time of 1.5 hours, I got pretty close but I think external environment temperatures varied a lot. Your mileage will vary with temperature settings and battery use. This makes a great gift for the espresso lover in your life. I already have plans to purchase a few for family members and friends.

Works great but double check size and 6oz limits

Posted by Jason Johnson on Oct 21st 2024

I’ve heard of Ember cups for some time but never felt compelled to buy one because I quit drinking coffee for awhile during Covid. I found I added way too much sugar and creamer and found it was just too many extra calories. But recently, I started drinking more espresso based drinks like Cappuccinos and Macchiatos or just shots of espresso with no added sugar, just frothed or flat milk, so this 6oz Ember was perfect. I’ll start by saying 6oz. just isn’t as big as you think. Even though I got this just for Espresso drinks I wish it was 2oz bigger. The cup is comfortable to hold but heavier than expected and also holds much less liquid than you would think because the heating elements, batteries and electronics are a good 1/3rd of the total height of the cup. With a double shot of espresso roughly 3oz. the other 3oz filled to the brim with cream or frothed milk is just barely big enough for your typical cappuccino or macchiato. I also didn’t love the huge AC adapter, it’s generic, large and just not very attractive. It’s also a pin-type, I would’ve much rather seen a USB-C plug on the charging coaster and either USB-C or A that connects to a small wall wart. This would make it possible to plug into the wall or into any USB port so you can just move the coaster and not have to also take the AC adapter. All of that said, the Ember itself works amazingly well, especially if you don’t want to steam or froth milk. I sometimes just add a splash of cold creamer or milk to my drinks and that obviously drops the temps of the drink. With Ember, you just set the temp in the App (really the only thing the app is used for) and it rather quickly warms the drink back up. My espresso came out at 147F, after adding creamer it dropped to 132F but within 7-8 minutes it was back up to 145F. The downside is doing that used about 1/4 the battery level, but I only drink 1 espresso a day and the Ember definitely made the drink more enjoyable as temps stayed hot throughout the drink. Typically temps drop immediately and faster the less liquid that is leftover. Overall very happy with this Ember, but I do wish I got a larger size for more flexibility on drink types.

Ideal for coffee and tea drinkers

Posted by Peter Kennedy on Oct 9th 2024

As a coffee drinker, I have done just about everything to keep my favorite morning beverage at a comfortable drinking temperature while I enjoy it. I was thrilled when I heard about Ember products and couldn’t wait to try them. This smaller mug is perfect for stronger beverages or when you just want a ‘touch’ of something. For example, I like having a cup of coffee in the morning, but in the afternoon, I prefer to have some hot tea. That said, I don’t like to have a large cup of tea. So, this 6oz mug is perfect for that afternoon tea time. Set up of the mug is easy. There is no assembly required and aside from plugging the charging dock into power, the user only needs to connect the mug to the app. The user manual is included as a printed booklet with the mug, but all the languages are not separated. Each step has every language option included with that step. For me, that makes it harder to read. The English instructions are highlighted in orange, but I think it would be easier if each language was separated. I have an iPhone and so the connection to the app was pretty much flawless. I used the original Ember mug a few years back and at the time, the app connection wasn’t very good. It worked, but not as smoothly as it does now. There is also an Apple Watch app that allows you to monitor and change your preferred temperature. To pair the mug to the app, you press/hold the button on the bottom of the mug until you see a blinking LED below the Ember logo. The app should recognize the connection via Bluetooth very quickly. One thing I want to mention is that the app is non-specific about device pairing. It will ask you what product you have and give you three options - the mug, travel mug, or travel mug 2. For a moment I wondered if I had selected the correct app and then I selected mug to see what would happen. It was the right selection, but it would be nice if either the specific products were listed or a dialogue box appeared letting the user know that it isn’t product-specific. This isn’t a dealbreaker for me, but it would make the user experience better. From here, you just set up your Ember account and make sure the firmware is updated. Then you have the option to set your preferences for the device. You can change the color of the LED and your preferred drink temperature as well as if you want the temperature reported in Fahrenheit or Celsius. I think it only took me about 5 minutes to get everything set up - from box to drinking. The mug did have a charge out of the box (about 30%) but I would recommend charging it before use. You can leave the mug on its charging dock while you are enjoying your beverage but you don’t have to for it do its work. As I mentioned I planned on using this smaller mug for my afternoon tea. So, to test how well the mug works to regulate the temperature, I made myself a cup of tea. I have a hot pot to heat water for coffee and tea so I set that to make some hot water and got my tea leaves set in my steeper. I poured the water into the mug and by the time I walked back to my desk, the app had already registered that there was liquid in the mug and that it was 191º. My preferred temperature is set at 135º, which is the default for the mug out of the box. The app had already started to reduce the temperature of the tea and after about 10 minutes, the drink had been reduced to the 135º setting. I took a drink at that temp and decided it was a good average warm temperature for tea. Next, I grabbed an ice cube and dropped it into the mug. The ice cube reduced the temperature to 106º. Once the temperature had stopped dropping, the Ember mug began working to bring the temperature back up to 135º. It only took about 5 minutes for it to raise the temp to 135º. This was very impressive to me. After about 30 minutes of working with the mug, I got a notification that the battery was low (3%), so I set it on its charging dock. I enjoy using this mug and think that if you drink warm drinks regularly, it’s a great investment. Pros: Packaging is subtle, but easily identified App-enabled Works when not on the charger Quick connection to the app cools and warms drink to set temp efficiently Watch app Cons: Manual is not separated by language (English is highlighted in orange). This makes it harder to read. The specific device is not available in the app.

NICE ENDULGENT HEATED SMART MUG FROM THE FUTURE

Posted by Michael Benson on Sep 18th 2024

EMBER - TEMPERATURE CONTROL SMART MUG - 6 OZ MODEL:CM210600US Best Buy Tech Insider Network NICE ENDULGENT HEATED SMART MUG FROM THE FUTURE OVERALL I can’t help but thinking of various SI-FI movies as I download a firmware update to my coffee mug! At first, I thought what a silly idea, I already have an old-fashioned coffee warmer on my desk, that , if we are hones, really only works in for the last centimeter of coffee and otherwise just seems to heat up the outside of my mug making it too hot to hold. Along comes the EMBER - SMART MUG to change my mind about how I enjoy my morning drinks. I like to savor my morning tea and coffee as I ease into the morning. Which usually means after a few minutes I’m drinking tepid liquid as best, even with my electric warmer. Now with the EMBER - SMART MUG it is always as hot (or hotter) than the moment it came out of the coffee/tea/espresso maker. We have 2 coffee makers one with decaf and one with regular beans. The one with regular beans makes a better brew, but its temp is a little low. Now with the EMBER - SMART MUG it is heated to the perfect temp. My wife likes her coffee as hot as possible, while I like it a few degrees cooler. With the EMBER - SMART MUG app we can adjust this with a single button press. SETUP I was a little worried with all the stickers, don’t microwave, don’t get the contacts wet, etc. Nevertheless, the setup was one of the better app installations in a while. Just put the EMBER - SMART MUG into pairing mode (I still can’t say that with a straight face), and the app finds it. Then you can control your temp, AND LED EFFECT COLOR! USAGE Somehow it magically knows when you have liquid in there and turns itself on. Then it does a fantastic job regulating the temperature until the liquid is gone. Next you rinse it out make sure it is dry and put it back on the base to recharge. It does take a long time to fully recharge (hours), and I wish it used USB-C chargers for example, instead of another proprietary charger. Yes, this version is only 6 oz, but that is OK as that is just about the size of output on the coffee settings from my espresso machines. I also look forward to having my espressos with the EMBER - SMART MUG which previously got cool too quickly. If you take cream or foam with your drinks, you will have a very small drink indeed. I also would have liked a lighter color. The mug is so dark it is like looking into a black hole and you can’t tell if you have any liquid left in the mug. Owing to the overall weight it always feels full. SUMMARY I like the EMBER - SMART MUG and make no mistakes, that this is a pure luxury item. But if, like me, you like to take your time to enjoy your hot drinks, then it is the perfect gift for yourself or others. I can already see us saving up enough Points to get another one (his/hers) before long.

No more busy cold coffee mornings

Posted by Annette Barton on Sep 15th 2024

I don’t need to tell anyone how frustrating it is to make a hot cup of coffee in the morning, getting distracted by the chaos of the day, only to return to a cold cup five minutes later. I’m sorry but reheating it in the microwave just isn’t the same as a fresh cup. The Ember coffee mug relieves the frustration using technology that can keep your cup of coffee at the perfect temperature for hours. The cup and charging cradle were very simple to set up and sync with the Ember app via your smartphone or tablet’s Bluetooth connection. Once the cup is synced in the app with a simple push of a button on the bottom of the cup, you can customize how hot you would like your coffee maintained at, up to 145 degrees. The Ember cup can keep your drink hot between 1-2 hours off of the charging cradle or constantly hot for hours sitting on the cradle. After using the Ember cup for a few days, I could taste the difference between a cup of coffee that was reheated in the microwave and one that maintained its temperature in the Ember cup. This is a great product for those of you who, like me, get too busy in the mornings, or any time of the day, and would love to just enjoy that hot cup of coffee when it’s convenient for you.

    Keeps hot beverages... hot

Posted by Jessica Luna on Sep 8th 2024

The Ember Smart mugs aim to solve a small inconvenience that many coffee and tea drinkers often encounter -- that the drinks just don’t stay hot enough from the first sip to the last. This latest model, dubbed the Ember Cup, has the smallest capacity in their lineup at 6 oz, but if you’re not a “big mug” coffee or tea drinker, it just might be the perfect size for your needs. The cup itself has a minimalist design: a smooth, matte finish, no handle, and inconspicuous branding with a single status LED at the bottom. The cup sits 3.25” tall with a 3” diameter, and 2” interior depth. The reason why the cup is so much shallower than the overall height is due to the electronics and re-chargeable Li-ion battery packed into the base. So while the cup may look larger from the exterior, it still only holds 6 oz. On the bottom of the cup is a single power button in the center, and around it are two gold metal ring charging contacts. When placed on the accompanying charging saucer/base, two small pins will touch the rings no matter how the cup is oriented, so precise placement is not needed. Since charging is not accomplished through induction, you won’t be able to charge the mug with other wireless charging pads like a Qi charger, however, additional charging bases can be purchased separately and are compatible with all Ember mug models if you want to have multiple places where you can set your mug down to charge. The coaster bases use a standard barrel-style plug with wall adapter and need to be plugged into an outlet. A full charge takes about 2 - 3 hours. The way the device functions is pretty straightforward; power it on, fill it with your hot beverage of choice, and a heating element in the base keeps it at a temperature of your choosing between 120°F to 145°F (or 50°C - 62.5°C). If the drink is hotter than the set temperature, the cup simply allows the drink to cool until it reaches the target temp. When it falls below that temperature, the heating element kicks in, and the LED will pulse white and remains a solid white while holding at the target temperature. It can keep your drink hot for up to 90 minutes on battery power, perfect if you want to take it when you roam, but be cautious of spills as it has no lid/cover. If you set the cup on its charging base, the temperature can be held constant indefinitely, though there is a 2-hour inactivity auto-shutoff feature that can be reset by simply picking up the mug. Note that the battery won’t increase in charge if the mug is actively maintaining temperature on the charging coaster. It’ll only charge when the cup is empty or is powered off by pressing and holding the power button for 3 seconds. Out-of-the-box the default holding temperature is 135°F, which I found to be a pleasantly hot and drinkable temperature for café au lait and cappuccino. The reasoning for not allowing higher temperatures is that this can degrade the flavor of a beverage over time, curdle drinks containing milk, and is a potential scald risk as well. To change the temperature setting, you’ll need to pair the mug to a mobile device via Bluetooth and install the Ember app, which requires you to register for an account. To enter pairing mode, simply press and hold the power button for 5 seconds. In the app you can also customize whether or not to receive push notifications when your beverage has reached the set temperature, change the temperature units to Celsius, and choose a custom color for the status LED. Your LED color will illuminate upon powering on/off and each time you pick up the mug, as it has a built-in accelerometer to detect motion and help multi-mug households identify individual mugs quickly and easily. When the cup is empty, it’ll automatically enter sleep mode and will not actively heat, though it will remain paired with a mobile device. Keep in mind this cup is not designed to “heat up” cold drinks quickly, as the heating element delivers only gentle warming and increases the beverage’s temperature about 1 degree every 10 seconds. In fact, if the temperature of its contents is under 100°F, the heating element will remain off, unless you manually change the holding temperature; changing this value will engage the heating element even if your drink is cold, but not if the mug is empty. Pouring in any drink that is at least luke warm, above 100°F, will automatically start the heating element if the cup is on and below the target temperature. One quirk I found is that if the cup is placed onto the charging base within about 15 seconds of powering it off, it will automatically power on again and connect to the most recently paired mobile device, if it’s in range. While it should still power off after 2 hours of inactivity, I nonetheless found this behavior a bit strange. The mug is neither microwave nor dishwasher safe, so hand washing with a soft sponge is the recommended cleaning method. You should also completely dry the mug before placing it on the charging base as the gold contacts and rings may be corroded by liquid, which can in turn cause charging issues. It seems a bit unexpected that the coaster base would not be waterproof though, since they're usually meant to catch spills and drips. You also won’t want to use metal utensils in the Ember, as this can damage the finish, so you can pre-mix your drinks before pouring into the Ember or use wooden or plastic spoons instead. Overall, the Ember Cup does the job it’s intended to and keeps a small amount of my hot beverages precisely at my desired drinking temperature, whether that’s tea, coffee, espresso, mulled wine, a hot toddy, etc. The battery life is decently long, and the charging base can extend that to last the whole day if need be. Its care requires a little extra mindfulness to keep it pristine, but I suppose that’s the trade-off for a relatively niche, "nice-to-have," luxury gadget.
