5 POWERFUL FOOD PROCESSOR
Posted by Lisa Booker on Dec 5th 2024
The Ninja Professional Plus Food Processor with Auto-iQ is powerful and relatively convenient. The package includes the Motor Base unit, a Processor Bowl, a Feed Chute Lid and Food “Pusher”, a Chopping Blade assembly, a Dough Blade assembly and a reversible Slicing/Shredding Disc with spindle. The power for this food processor originates with the 850 watt, two speed motor (Ninja also claims that the motor is rated at 1000 Peak Watts of power). The motor is loud of course, but not excessively loud. The motor does seem to produce more heat than would be expected. Even with a relatively short period of use, the motor base was palpably warm. It made me wonder if the motor would overheat during prolonged use or under a heavy load, such as dough making. I did not run it for an unnecessarily long duration in order to “test” the motor and determine if it would, in fact overheat, nor did we make dough. The motor is reportedly thermally protected, so in the event that it overheats, it will shut off until the motor cools down sufficiently to resume use. The Motor Base is equipped with small suction-cup feet which very strongly adhere to any relatively smooth countertop surface. They hold the food processor in place, and keep it stable in operation. However, removing the unit from the surface requires a little effort. I found it easiest to simply “pry” an edge of each suction cup slightly, in order to release its grip from the counter, rather than using brute force to detach it. The operating buttons / switches on the Motor Base include Power On/Off, Chop, Puree, Dough and Disc (Auto-iQ functions), as well as Low, High and Pulse (Manual functions). The Auto-iQ functions provide pre-programmed operations which are convenient time-savers. For example, the Auto-iQ Chop function is comprised of three cycles of an approximately two second duration pulse, at the high speed setting. A second or successive repeat of the Chop cycle produces a finer/smaller chop with each repetition. All of the buttons are backlit by white LEDs which is very nice. Any operating cycle can be stopped/interrupted by simply pressing the appropriate button a second time. The Processor Bowl and Lid are relatively thick plastic, and appear as if they will be durable, if not accidentally damaged through mishap or abused with rough handling. The Lid is equipped with a silicone rubber gasket seal (which does not appear to be replaceable) which prevents any liquid contents from escaping during processing. The Processor Bowl is very easily installed onto the Motor Base by rotating clockwise, and it is both audible and palpable when it is properly latched into place. Likewise, the Lid also snaps / latches in place atop the Processor Bowl. If either the Processor Bowl or the Lid is not fully latched in place, safety interlock switches on them prevent the Motor from operating. The user is alerted to the safety switch operation by all of the backlit buttons / switches on the Motor Base flashing in unison. The Processor Bowl holds a generous 9 cups. The Feed Chute, which is curved on one long axis, measures a scant 2-¾”, by between 1-?” and 1-9/16”. Many foods will require being cut in order to fit the dimensions of the Feed Chute, which might not be practical or suitable for certain foods or preparation styles. Using the Feed Chute can be challenging with some foods, as well. Thin or cylindrical foods like carrots or celery seem easier to slice or shred when several are placed in the Feed Chute together, whereby they keep each other more upright when being fed into the blade. The Slicing/Shredding Disk is mounted atop a separate Spindle, and is reversible with Slicing performed by one side and Shredding by the other. The Slicing thickness appears to be ?” and the Shredding thickness appears to be 1/16”. Unfortunately, the Ninja does not include additional Slicing/Shredding disks to support thicker or thinner slicing or shredding. That is disappointing. Some foods have a tendency to collect between the Slicing/Shredding Disk and the Lid of the bowl, and of course some foods, like hard cheeses will adhere to both the disk and the lid. Also, the amount of pressure exerted when pushing the food through the chute, affects the thickness of the resulting slices. If a steady, but not excessive pressure is used, most slices will be close to generally uniform thickness, at the intended ?”. However, if light or inconsistent pressure is applied, slices will be unintentionally thinner and generally not of the desired uniform thickness. Excessive pressure however will deflect the blade and/or spindle and potentially damage the Ninja. Since the size of the food item is limited by the dimensions of the Feed Chute, and the thickness of slices or shreds is limited by the non-adjustable single disk, for some preparations it will still be easier and/or better to use alternative implements. A food processor does not replace good knife skills, nor will it replace a mandolin when the thickness of the slices or shreds, or the size of the sliced food (i.e. slicing tomatoes or potatoes in full size slices) matters. Likewise, for small quantities, such as chopping/mincing several garlic cloves, it is generally not worth the additional effort to set up and then clean a food processor. The real utility of food processors, such as this Ninja Professional Plus, is when preparing larger quantities with faster speed. The Chopping Blade assembly is unique. Rather than the typical food processor blade arrangement of two opposing blades mounted at the same level, the Ninja Professional Plus blades are mounted at staggered heights on the spindle. This theoretically will chop food more efficiently and effectively. The blades are of course extremely sharp. The chopping performance appears to be very good. Of course, many foods will be propelled to the walls of the bowl, which requires intermediate scraping down of the sides with a soft plastic or silicone bowl scraper. The Dough Blade assembly essentially replicates the unique design of the Chopping Blade, but is entirely comprised of plastic, rather than having metal blades. We have not yet made dough in the Ninja, and thus have not evaluated the performance of the Dough Blade at this juncture. Curiously, the User Manual includes among its many warnings, the following on Page 5, Item 30: “Do not process dry ingredients with the Chopping Blade Assembly”. I found that to be somewhat baffling, and so did the Ninja Consumer Support Representative who I consulted on the telephone. Since “dry ingredients” presumably include anything from bread (for bread crumbs) to nuts (for chopping or processing into nut butter), that exclusion would severely limit the usefulness of the Ninja food processor. Many people don’t read the manuals which accompany appliances, but failing to read the Ninja manual will result in missing at least two warnings against loading the bowl with ice and attempting to produce “crushed” ice with the Ninja, which would almost certainly damage/ruin the thin, sharp chopping blades. Cleaning the Ninja Professional Plus Food Processor was generally easy. The more challenging components include the Chopping Blade assembly, the Slicing/Shredding Disk and the Food Chute in the Lid. Because the blades and slicing edges are extremely sharp, and accessing them can easily expose the user to injury, it is advisable to use a kitchen brush with handle on those sharp items. I found a toothbrush to be ideal for cleaning the slicing disk knife edge and shredding slots. Additionally, the Ninja product website recommends cleaning by using a few drops of dishwashing detergent in some water in the bowl and pulsing to clean the blades and bowl. Overall, the Ninja Professional Plus food processor is a great appliance. It is powerful and works fast and easily. It has a respectable nine cup capacity. It would be nice to have additional Slicing/Shredding disks for producing varying thicknesses, and I would have appreciated a larger dimension food chute. However, we will primarily use the Chopping Blade which ostensibly is a stand-out. The controls are excellent, and the pre-programmed Auto iQ operations are actually very practical and useful. Having an 850 watt motor also sets the Ninja apart from other food processors, as such powerful motors are not typical in food processors of this size.

5 Ninja doesn’t disappoint

I tried all the features on the processor and even a little more. I used the blade and shredded zucchini and sliced cucumbers. Very nice even slicing and grating. There were very few pieces left after the grating was done. I puréed blackberries and then added ice cream and milk to make a mean smoothie milk shake right in the processor. I chopped celery, carrots and onions to add to meatloaf. The final thing I tried was making the dough for peanut butter cookies. Wonderful consistency and very fast to mix. This is an excellent addition to my kitchen.

5 Well Made Processor
Posted by Tiffany Jackson on Nov 22nd 2024
The Ninja Professional Plus Food Processor is Ninja’s latest food processor that comes with their Auto-IQ presets. If you are familiar with food processors, then what comes with the Ninja is no surprise. It has the standard chopping blade, and slice/shred/grating disc, feed chute, and processing bowl. It came with the surprise of the dough blade (none of my prior processors had one of these), and the aforementioned Auto-IQ settings. Features The processor packs a 1000W motor base, which has plenty of power to spin the blades or dough hook in thick mixes. The motor base, while powerful, is also pretty quiet - especially compared to my outgoing unit. My old Cuisinart processor had an 800W motor and was decently louder at full tilt than the Ninja, which made me pretty happy while using it. The cup/bowl is also pretty large, coming it at 9 cups its definitely the highest capacity processor I have used. The bowl clicks onto the base securely. The lid to the bowl has a gasket and a locking button. The gasket lets you puree up more liquid ingredients without making a mess – worked great for making restaurant style salsa. The Auto-IQ settings include chop, puree, dough, and disc. The disc setting obviously uses the disc attachment, and the dough setting uses the dough attachment. Pretty self-explanatory. These presets run a timed program that, for the most part, get the job done. The dough setting worked great while making cookies. The disc setting worked well shredding lettuce, and the puree worked well for salsa. The chop setting is more dependent on what is being processed, but it handled a white onion well and made quick work of some basil. There’s also low, high, and pulse settings for those that like manual control. When using the dough hook, the manual specifically states that it can only be used on the dough setting or low. The chopping blade has 2 sets of slicing blades – one at the bottom, and one in the middle. My old processor had blades on the bottom only, which meant if the food didn’t reach the bottom it didn’t get chopped. Lastly, all parts of the processor are top-rack dishwasher safe Safety You can remove the bowl while the unit is powered on and running, but as soon as you start to twist it off the motor cuts off. This works as a safety interlock and it does a good job. As you twist the lid on the button clicks into place and holds the lid. To remove you must press in the button first. Again, working as another safety interlock, the lid button helps keep the user safe. Also, without the lid in place (and locked), the motor won’t turn on. Trying to Open the lid while the motor is running will also cut off the motor. Ninja did a very good job designing these interlocks, so you can feel safe while using this processor. How’d It Do? The food processor work great! I was really happy with how it handled everything. I made salsa with it first using only stuff from my garden. The gasket on the lid kept everything in the bowl – something my old processor struggled with. The puree setting helped me get the salsa to a nice and smooth texture without liquifying it like a blender would. My mom was in town this last week and made cookies with my kids. The dough hook did a great job in this area. This was really handy since I no longer have a mixer (hand or stand). My mom was really happy with how it dough batches turned out, and she liked how easy it was to use and clean up afterwards. Using the disc for taco night I shredded some lettuce with the slicing side, and grated some cheese with the other side. Usually cleaning the disc after cheese is a pain. But since this does a good job holding in liquids I was able to fill the bowl with warm – NOT HOT – water and pulse it a few times to dislodge the stuck on cheese. Hot water/liquids should not be processed due to steam build up that may occur. Other thoughts All put together the Ninja is larger than my old processor (2 inches tall), but yet it packs down smaller due to the spindle design. That means it fits in my cabinets easier, so that’s a plus. I wish there was a pouch or something for the disc to reside in, especially since its sharp and there’s no place on the unit to store it (that’s assuming you are storing the chopping blade in the bowl). Fit and finish on the processor is excellent. Everything clicks together so soundly, and that gives it a solid build feel. I have to think this unit (motor, bowl, blades) will stand the test of time. The recipe book has a number of really good ideas in it. Definitely worth the look, especially if you are new to using a food processor. Overall, I had no complaints with the food processor. My old processor was great as well, and I enjoyed using it, but the Ninja is better in every way. The dough hook is awesome to use, the chopping blade with its 2 sets of knives did excellent, and the design of the bowl and lid safety mechanisms were well done.

4 Good but missing parts
Posted by Mark Vazquez on Nov 21st 2024
This unit completes my ninja kitchen. The blades are perfect for puree and chopping. I thought my blender did a good enough job pureeing but this takes it to another level. Auto iq does a great job of mixing as well. My only issue is it does not come with the spindle for slicing.
