    Powerful disposer

Posted by Sherry Jones on Dec 6th 2024

It has been awhile since I installed a new disposer. While the instructions are decent there are plenty of good how-to installation videos which makes it pretty straightforward. Overall, the install was simple. However, I did have to make a run to the hardware store as the drain pipe was too short to connect to the disposer. My previous disposer was wider than this one, not a big deal, but when you are installing this disposer if you get a direct fit then consider yourself lucky. Many disposers are not hard-wired, you have to remove the electric cord from the existing disposer and install it on to your new one. Not the Smart Choice, its already hardwired with the plug in place ready to go. As far as parts go, everything is included except a disposer key. The one you see in the attached picture is from my previous disposer. Its not absolutely essential, when connecting the disposer to the sink you could twist the connecting ring on top using a screwdriver, but the keys are a little more convenient. When first turning it on, it does make a bit of a loud “pop” but according to the instructions “The Anti-jam Swivel Impellers make a clicking sound as they initially swing into place. As far as disposing goes, yeah, it definitely makes short work of anything you put into it. Regarding loudness of the disposer, its fairly quite but honestly I don’t think its that much quieter than our previous ¾ HP disposer. But this one has an extra half a horsepower at 1 ¼ HP so yes, its powerful. It does come with a lifetime warranty so that's a bonus. Overall, its a very good disposer, perhaps not as quiet as I had hoped but that's probably because of how powerful it is. I'd recommend it.

    Best disposal on the market.

    Powerful and Quiet

Posted by Erin Smith on Nov 29th 2024

I got this to replace my old Insinkerator Badger that broke. I couldn’t find a better price at 1.25 HP and all the reviews are good. This is powerful and quiet, does a good job so far. I only had 2 problems installing: The pipe come out further and is longer than the one on my old disposer so I coukdny use it. The magnet guard WILL NOT fit, the opening isn’t big enough. It wont sqeeze in behind the screws.

    Impressive

I have owned several garbage disposals and the Smart Choice 1.25 hp is the best of them. The disposal is sold with a 3 ft. plug for the applications in which a receptacle is under the sink. Or you can remove the plug and hardwire the disposal to an electrical source. The Smart Choice disposal connects to the sink as all do, by way of the 3 bolt mount. If you are replacing an existing disposal then you can simply un- turn the existing and then attach the new by turning it on the mount and then plug it in. Done. If you remove the cord the installation is a bit more work. Either way, if you have a dishwasher make sure to pop out the dishwasher 'plug'. The disposal is a little heavy and that I am sure is from the insulated body. This unit is much quieter than my previous one. The cutting mechanism pulverizers the waste. It spins very fast with great results. What I like is that my sink doesn't rumble when the unit is on. This means that the the dispisal is more balanced and that is a plus. I would believe that the 'balance' will put less strain on the motor. There is an easily accesible reset button on the side of the unit. My other unit had the reset switch on the bottom making it harder to feel around for it. The unit comes with a splash guard which is standard. It has something that is new to me. It has a magnetic strap that you attach to the collar of the disposal and it is supposed to help to stop metal items from going down the sink. I guess this is a new thing with disposals. The Smart Choice 1.25 hp unit comes with an unheard of TEN YEAR WARRANTY. That alone is very impressive. I am very impressed. I am anticipating many years of use.

Quiet, powerful and Silver Guard. Easy to install!

Posted by Craig Murray on Nov 25th 2024

The Smart Choice 1-1/4 HP Garbage Disposal comes well packaged with the disposal, manual, magnetic ring, plastic stopper and almost everything you need to install it. The disposal is well built and surprisingly small. It is smaller than a 1 HP disposal it replaced. It uses Silver Guard magnetic ring to capture cutlery before it enters the disposal. No more chewed cutlery? Awesome! Installation was straight forward. You should have everything you need except for maybe some plumbers putty. I used this as a teaching moment to have my 22 year old son to remove the old disposal and install the new one. We were all done in around 90 minutes. It would have been faster but the pipes did not quite line up between the old disposal and the new one. So some measuring and cutting was required. Once it was all installed, you need to test for leaks. You want to fill your sinks full of water so you get pressure going down the pipes. Pull the stoppers and watch for leaks. The mount is the 3-bolt sink flange kind. The power cord is about 30 inches long. This should be long enough. The disposal is powerful and quiet. It spins at a powerful 2800 RPM. A 1-1/4 HP is as strong as they come. It is MUCH quieter than my old disposal. When you punch out the dishwasher blocking plate, the instructions tell you that you can leave it in the disposal and it will chew it up. That is how strong it is! The only minor item is the splash guard seals very good. Many do this at first and then open up as they are used. In the beginning the water did not drain through the splash guard very well. It is already better after a few days. So if you experience this, do not worry. Overall I rate this disposal 5 out of 5 stars. It is powerful, quiet, and smaller than the other disposals I have had. Installation was easy as my son, who had never done this before, accomplished the install with easy. I recommend this to anyone looking for a new disposal. I love the Silver Guard function!

    Powerful and noticeably quiet

This Smart Choices continuous food disposal made significant changes compared to my previous disposer. It is worth noting that this Smart food disposal has 12 years of warranty on it and a LIFETIME corrosion warranty. From the outside, I can tell it is made of high-quality materials and well constructed which is stainless steel. Not too heavy to lift, but it amazes me how well it is built and the quality of materials. It is powerful even with its max power of 1.25HP. It has Anti-Jam Swivel that starts with every start-up. Installation took me around 2 hours, beginning with taking out my old one and deep cleaning the entire under-sink cabinet and washing and wiping off the rubber mat under the sink. Second, I had to replace one of the side joints for a shorter length due to the larger size of this disposal. I mounted and twisted it using the three bolts. I appreciate the long power cable as my old one was too short. After the installation was complete, the disposal was up and running. My big wins from this disposal are: dB noise is significantly less than my previous one, fast grinding for food waste as fast as I can hear the water running through quickly. It makes less vibration, and the removable splash guard is great for easy cleaning. my only hassle was the space it takes up. The size is too large to take up much space, but I understand it is due to the feature of sound insulation which to me is a must. Also, the anti-jam swivel impellers make a loud sound at the first start-up. Overall, I'm glad about this disposal's features and, most importantly, the noise insulation and smooth and fast grinding process.

Strong Motor, Great Value, Awesome Warranty

Posted by Mrs. Elizabeth Adkins on Nov 5th 2024

I owned another brand of garbage disposal and noticed a thick band of mold on the rubber gasket. I figured it was time for a replacement. I decided to replace my 0.75HP with this 1.25HP disposal. Even though I doubt I will ever need the extra HP, I wanted a unit with a lot of soundproofing to limit the noise. Setup I would only recommend a garbage disposal with the quick install ring system, like this one. It only took about 20 minutes to install this after removing my old unit. It actually took me longer to rewire the outlet, since this new disposal had a 3-prong cord and the old unit was wired directly to the wall on/off switch. Performance I throw most of my food scraps in the garbage, so I did not test the full potential of this unit. However, I found it cleared the sink a little faster than my previous disposal. I found the noise to be a little louder, but the increase in noise was not all that significant since there is a half horsepower difference. My previous unit would rattle the sink during heavy use while draining, but the Smart Choice disposal does not. This unit comes with a ring of magnets at the mouth of the disposal which can help prevent silverware from falling in, but I wasn’t impressed with how well this works; I would still recommend checking the disposal before turning it on. Warranty I have pretty good faith that this disposal will keep going for years due to the 12-year warranty. Even though I hope I never need it, it is nice to know I do not have to worry about it failing. Due to the relatively low price, powerful motor, and 12-year warranty, I would be happy to recommend this disposal.

Powerful & Quiet, But Large In Diameter

Posted by Kara Jackson on Oct 30th 2024

KEY FEATURES 10 Year Warranty Stainless Steel Construction 1.25HP, 7.5 Amp Motor, one of the most powerful in its class. INSTALLATION This is one of the few products that I would recommend anyone, but the most experienced homeowners leave to a handyman, plumber, or electrician to install. While it may be up for debate, I fancy myself as a decently knowledgeable and experienced homeowner. There are few things that I won’t attempt to tackle. I decided to take on this installation myself. My assortment of plumbing and hand tools is quite extensive. Mostly because I use a portion of the savings, I recoup doing DIY projects, versus hiring a professional, as a good reason to buy new tools. I’m a firm believer in the old saying: He who dies with the most tools, wins. I start with this intro because having to acquire the tools and materials for most homeowners would be a great source of frustration for most. While I had most everything tool-wise, I needed to install the disposal, I did find myself having to modify and move PEX and PVC plumbing to accommodate my new disposal. While not an impossible challenge, it did lead to unnecessary frustration, not to mention a good back ache due to lying across the sink cabinet. Almost all newer disposals use a common 3 bolt mounting system to retain the unit to the sink bottom. I was extremely fortunate in that the Badger disposal I was replacing, matched nearly perfectly to my new Smart Choice. What a time saver it was, not having to dismantle every single part from the old disposal to install the new one. Yes, I know it is cheating, but I’m OK with it. For those not as lucky as I was, aside from tools and plumbing supplies, the Smart Choice includes everything you need to get it installed. The one thing that made this installation difficult is the overly large diameter of the new Smart Choice disposal. The top part of the disposal is nearly 2 inches larger in diameter than my Badger & most other disposals on the market. Because my sink & island were installed to match up to a Badger disposal, this new Smart Choice required moving several drain lines to make room for its larger diameter. Frustrating. USE The Smart Choice disposal (a division of Electrolux) is a great addition to the kitchen. My “builder’s grade” Badger disposal has always been reliable, but it was obnoxiously loud and frankly not that powerful. Even though it was rated at 3/4HP, it wasn’t an impressive performer often bogging down during after-dinner cleanups. The Smart Choice is rated at nearly twice the power of my Badger. It clocks in at an impressive 1.25HP. The increase in power is immediately noticeable. Foods that would often bog down my Badger didn’t seam to phase the Smart Choice. It has ground through everything I’ve put down the drain without issue. Most importantly, at least to me in my open concept kitchen, is the reduction in noise when in use. My old Badger would drown out conversations, TV, etc. The Smart Choice is markedly quieter. NEGATIVES The one negative I have with this unit is the large size of the disposal. The top ½ of the disposal is nearly 8 inches in diameter. A good 2 inches bigger than my previous disposal. Under a sink, where space is tight and limited the way it is, every little bit matters. This increase in size caused me major headaches getting it to fit, requiring a great deal of plumbing mods. I don’t knock the disposal for my headaches, I knew it going into the installation, but for those that are looking, I would do some careful measuring before purchasing to either save yourself time and headache, or money in unnecessary plumbing modifications when you could opt for a smaller Smart Choice disposal instead. CONCLUSIONS Performance and use, I have no complaints about the Smart Choice disposal. It is very powerful and does its job efficiently, and most importantly, quietly. This is the biggest Smart Choice disposal, and it has impressive specs with an impressive warranty to match. If you have the room under your sink, or are willing and/or able to make room to accommodate the disposal, I doubt you will be disappointed. RECOMMENDED

Quiet, powerful disposal w/ cord & magnetic catch

Posted by Benjamin Clark on Oct 27th 2024

This disposal has plenty of power, is quiet and was easy to install thanks to the pre-installed cord. My old disposal was a low end 1/2HP unit, and this Smart Choice disposal was an overdue upgrade. (((Pros))) 1.Quiet. I took some before and after noise level readings and the Smart Choice disposal is actually a few decibels quieter than my old one, even though it has twice the power. With the disposal running I got 77dB standing at the sink and 71dB at the cabinet door (the noise insulated case really works). 2.Stailess steel internals that will not rust. 3. Pre-installed cord saves time and money (at least $10, probably more, for an appliance cord). 4. Included magnetic ring to catch silverware before it can fall into the disposal. 5. The baffle/splash guard just pops in and out for easy cleaning or clearing a jam. 6. Outlet pipe height is nearly the same and it is compatible with a standard 3 bolt mount - so you may not have to change your sink flange or much in terms of piping. I changed my 3-bolt mount to the one that came with the kit (new and shiny) and the tools I ended up using were a flat-head screwdriver (snap ring and band clamps), Philips-head screwdriver (disposer outlet and leverage to tighten the disposal on the mount), and plumber's putty for the flange. (((Things to Consider))) 1. The outside case looks nice and seems like it will be easy to wipe down, but it is not sealed so be careful not to get water in it when reinstalling the dishwasher hose. The casing is also thicker, so there was a little less dishwasher stub to grab onto than my old disposal and I had to make sure to clock the band clamp, so it didn't rub. 2. I wish it had a slot on the bottom for an Allen wrench to clear a jam like my old disposal. To clear a jam, you are supposed to remove the baffle/splash guard and use a wood broom handle per the instructions. The good news is there is a overload to protect the motor if there is a jam and the reset button is right on the front near the bottom. 3. The baffle/splash guard is a little too rigid and doesn't have big enough holes, which causes water to pool in the sink. The positive is that, combined with the magnetic catch, it is hard to drop something into the disposal (like a spoon). I am hoping it loosens up a little with use overtime. 4. If you use an SOS pad (steel wool) or try to wash something that has metal particles in it down the drain, the magnetic catch on the flange can collect the particles and they may react/stain the stainless steel. If you have a double bowl sink (like me) I would suggest using the opposite side for stuff like this or make sure you remove the baffle/splash guard and wipe the flange.
